The paper studies the controller design problem for time invariant linear systems using time varying nonlinear compensators. Using two different approaches the authors show that nonlinear time varying compensators (instead of linear time invariant ones) do not improve the optimal disturbance rejection of \(\ell^ \infty\) disturbances. The first approach involves the introduction of an operator analogous to the Hankel operator arising in \({\mathcal H}^ \infty\)-optimal control. The second approach is based on a linearization of the nonlinear time varying controller.
