This paper considers a problem on matrix identities arising from the author's study of derivations in prime rings with involution [Commun. Algebra 20, No. 5, 1427-1446 (1992; Zbl 0759.16014)]. Set \(G_ n(X,Y) = X^{n-1} Y + X^{n-2} YX + \ldots + YX^{n-1}\). Let \(*\) be an involution of the matrix ring \(M_ n(F)\) for an algebraically closed field \(F\) of characteristic not 2. The problem is to determine when, for a fixed nilpotent symmetric or skew-symmetric matrix \(B\), \(G_ n(B,Y) = 0\) for all symmetric matrices \(Y\) or for all skew-symmetric matrices \(Y\). The answer is precisely when \(*\) is transpose, \(B\) is symmetric and \(Y\) is skew-symmetric.
