Let \(X\) be a compact complex manifold and \(G\) a connected complex Lie group operating holomorphically on \(X\) with an open orbit \(\Omega:=G/H\). Then \(X\) is by definition a \(G\)-equivariant compactification of \(\Omega\). A given \(\Omega\) may have at the same time Kählerian and also non- Kählerian \(G\)-equivariant compactifications. What kind of conditions for the pair \((G,H)\) are necessary or sufficient to ensure the existence of a \(G\)-equivariant Kählerian compactification of \(\Omega\)? For semisimple \(G\) it is known that any \(G\)-quivariant Kähler compactification of \(\Omega\) is projective algebraic. It exists if and only if \(H\) is a linear algebraic subgroup of \(G\). The author shows that in general there is a necessary condition related to the commutator group \(G'\) of \(G\), namely that the \(G'\)-orbit \(\Omega':=G' H/H\) is closed in \(\Omega\) and that \(\pi_ 1(\Omega')\) is finite (Theorem 2.5). She proves that this condition is also sufficient in the case of nilpotent \(G\) (Theorem 3.9) and in the case \(H=\{e\}\), (Corollary 3.4). An example shows that it need not be sufficient if \(G\) is solvable. One may also ask for the existence of a \(G\)-equivariant projective algebraic compactification \(Y\) of \(\Omega\). The paper gives the following answer (Theorem 3.5 and Theorem 3.8): If \(G\) is nilpotent or if \(H=\{e\}\) then \(Y\) exists if and only if \(\Omega\) has a \(G\)-equivariant Kähler compactification and \(G/G' H\) is holomorphically separable.
