    Let \(M\) be a finitely generated module over a local ring \((R,n)\), and let \(b^ R_ i(M)\) be the Betti numbers of \(M\) \((b_ i^ R(M)=\dim_{R/n}\text{Tor}^ R_ i(M,R/N))\). The Betti numbers are said to have exponential growth if there exist real numbers \(1<A\leq B\) such that \(A^ i\leq\sum^ i_{j=0}b^ R_ i(M)\leq B^ i\) for \(i\gg 0\), and strong exponential growth if \(A^ i\leq b^ R_ i(M)\leq B^ i\) for \(i\gg 0\). Some results from this paper are: Let \((S,{\mathfrak m})\) be a local ring and \(R=S/I\) for an ideal \(I\) of \(S\). Put \(J=I:{\mathfrak m}\) and \(c=\dim_{S/{\mathfrak m}}{\mathfrak m}J/{\mathfrak m}I\). Then for any finitely generated \(R\)-module \(M\), \(c\cdot b^ R_ i({\mathfrak m})\leq b^ R_{i+2}(M)\) for \(i\geq 1\). (Hence, if \(c\geq 2\), \(M\) has strong exponential growth.) If \(J\) is \({\mathfrak m}\)-primary then \(c\geq\dim S\). If \(I\) is an \({\mathfrak m}\)-primary \({\mathfrak m}\)-full ideal contained in \({\mathfrak m}^ 2\), then any nonfree finitely generated module has strong exponential growth. (\(I\) is called \({\mathfrak m}\)-full if \(I={\mathfrak m}I:x\) for some \(x\in S\)).
