An associative ring \(R\) with identity is said to have condition \((*)^*\) (resp. \((F)^*\)) if every left (resp. every finitely generated) not singular module has a nonzero projective direct summand. Rings with condition \((*)^*\) have been studied by \textit{M. Harada} [Ring Theory, Proc. Antwerp. Conf. 1978, Lect. Notes Pure Appl. Math. 51, 669-690 (1978; Zbl 0449.16018)] and \textit{K. Oshira} [Hokkaido Math. J. 13, 310- 338 (1984; Zbl 0559.16013)]. Characterizations of rings with \((F)^*\) are given, in general, but also with additional conditions on the ring. For rings with finite uniform dimension, for example, results similar to those for \((*)^*\) [in loc. cit.] are obtained. If \(R\) is a semi-perfect ring with \(\bigcap J^ n = 0\) and \(R\) an FQF-3 ring (that is, there exists a faithful left module \(P\) which is a direct summand of every finitely generated faithful module) with each of the homomorphic images of \(R\) FQF-3 as well, then each of the finitely generated modules over \(R\) is direct sum of cyclic modules \(C_ i\), \(i = 1,\dots,n\). Each of these \(C_ i\) is either a uniserial nonsingular projective module or is injective over the ring \(R/\text{Ann}(C_ i)\). It is interesting to note that these rings have properties very much similar to those of the integers.
