Let \(x_ i\) be given real numbers \((i\in\alpha\subset{\mathbf n}=\{1,\dots,n\})\). Find \(x_ i\) for \(i\in{\mathbf n}\backslash\alpha\) such that the Hankel matrix defined by the sequence \(x_ 1,\dots,x_ n\), \(0,\dots,0\) has lowest possible norm (as an operator of the Euclidean space \(\mathbb{R}^ n)\). The problem, motivated by seismology, is close to a nonlinear eigenvalue problem. The authors suggest a new class of computer algorithms.
