Let \(a\) and \(f\) be meromorphic functions in the plane. Then \(a\) is said to be small (with respect to \(f\)), if \(T(r,a)=o(T(r,f))\) as \(r\to\infty\) holds. Also, if \(\Theta(\theta_ 1,\dots,\theta_ n)=\bigcup^ n_{j=1}\{z: \arg z=\theta_ j\}\) is a system of rays, the zeros of \(f- a\) are said to be attracted to \(\Theta\), if, for every \(\varepsilon>0\), the number of zeros of \(f-a\) in \(| z|<r\), but outside the sectors \(|\arg z-\theta_ j|<\varepsilon\), \(j=1,\dots,n\), is \(o(T(r,f))\) as \(r\to\infty\). The main result of the present paper is as follows: Theorem 1. Suppose that, for some small function \(a(z)\), the following conditions are satisfied: (a) The zeros of \(f-a\) are attracted to \(\Theta(\theta_ 1,\dots,\theta_ n)\), (b) \(\lim m(r,1/(f-a))T(r,f)=0\), (c) \(f\) has finite order \(>\max_{1\leq j\leq n}\left({\pi\over \theta_{j+1}-\theta_ j}\right)\). Then \(\liminf m(r,1/(f-b))/T(r,f)=0\) for every small function \(b(z)\). The authors also give an example showing that condition (c) is sharp.
