    Let \(L^ 0 (\mathbb{T}^ m)\) be the space of measurable functions on the \(m\)-dimensional torus \(\mathbb{T}^ m\), and let \(P(f;x)\) \((0\leq x\leq 1)\) denote the nondecreasing rearrangement of a function \(f\in L^ 0 (\mathbb{T}^ m)\). \textit{E. M. Stein} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 74, 140-170 (1961; Zbl 0103.089)] proved the following result: Let \(T_ n: L_ p(\mathbb{T}^ m)\to L^ 0 (\mathbb{T}^ m)\) \((1\leq p<\infty)\) be a sequence of translation invariant linear operators which are continuous in measure. If \(\sup_ n | (T_ n f)(u)|<\infty\) a.e. for every \(f\in L_ p (\mathbb{T}^ m)\), then there is a constant \(C>0\) such that for any \(f\in L_ p(\mathbb{T}^ m)\) and \(x\in (0,1]\) we have \(P(\sup_ n| T_ n f|;x)x^{1/q}\leq C\| f\|_ q\), with \(q=\min\{p,2\}\). The case \(T_ n=T\) for all \(n\) provides a criterion for continuity in measure. In this paper, the author studies what properties of spaces \(X\), \(Y\) of measurable functions on \(\mathbb{T}^ m\) allow to obtain analogous criteria of continuity for translation invariant operators \(T: X\to Y\), or criteria of pointwise convergence for sequences of such operators.
