In terms of the affine normal and conormal mappings, the author answers the following question: when is an equiaffine transversal vector field a metric normal relative to some pseudo-Euclidean structure? Using this result a new proof of the theorem of Cartan-Norden, as well as a characterization of affine locally symmetric surfaces in \(R^ 3\) in case where the Ricci tensor of the induced connection is nondegenerate, is given and an affine version of the theorem egregium is proved.
