In their previous paper [J. Funct. Anal. 108, No. 1, 88-132 (1992)] the authors introduced the notion of a Hilbert complex, i.e. a differential complex of vector spaces \[ 0 \to {\mathcal D}_ 0 @>D_ 0>> {\mathcal D}_ 1 @>D_ 1>> \cdots @>D_{N-1}>> {\mathcal D}_ N\to 0 \] where \({\mathcal D}_ i\) is dense in some Hilbert space \(H_ i\) and \(D_ i:{\mathcal D}_ i \to H_{i+1}\) is closed. This structure turned out to be quite useful for studying e.g. weak and strong Hodge decomposition, \(L^ 2\)-cohomology and \(L^ 2\)-index, Poincaré duality, smooth cohomology, Künneth type formulas, etc. Their main application was for the analysis of elliptic complexes on singular spaces, in particular they studied the de Rham complex in various situations (op. cit.). The paper under review is a further attempt in this direction, its main motivation being to incorporate the so-called ``\(L^ 2\)-Kähler package'' [\textit{J. Cheeger}, \textit{M. Goresky} and \textit{R. MacPherson}, Ann. Math. Stud. 102, 303-340 (1982; Zbl 0503.14008)] into the framework of Hilbert complexes. For example, one of their main results states simple functional analytic properties of the de Rham complex on an arbitrary Kähler manifold in order for the \(L^ 2\)-Kähler package to hold.
