Chebyshev polynomials are orthogonal on \([-1,1]\) with respect to the weight \((1-x)^ \alpha (1+x)^ \beta\) where \(\alpha,\beta=\pm 1/2\). Thus we get polynomials of the first kind \((T_ n,\alpha=\beta=-1/2)\), second kind \((U_ n,\alpha=\beta=1/2)\), third kind \((V_ n,\beta=- \alpha=1/2)\) and fourth kind \((W_ n,\alpha=-\beta=1/2)\). Using \(x=\cos \theta\), all of them can be written in terms of sines or cosines. In this paper some properties of these polynomials are reviewed and their usefulness in (near) minimax approximation, the computation of indefinite integrals (with suitable weight functions), integrals transforms (Hilbert or logarithmic kernel) and the solution of hypersingular (integral) equations is illustrated.
