The paper deals with an integrated production-maintenance optimal control model where the maintenance activities considered are of the type of indirect preventive maintenance (lubrication, adjustments, etc.). The objective of the model is to choose the rate of maintenance and the rate of production that minimize the overall costs of inventory/shortage, production, and maintenance. The existence of the optimal control policy is verified, and necessary and sufficient conditions for optimality are obtained.
