Each permutation \(\pi\) of the non-negative integers gives rise to a linear operator defined on Haar polynomials by \(T_ \pi(\sum c_ m\chi_ m)= \sum c_ m\chi_{\pi(m)}\). By Parseval's identity, this operator is an isometry (hence continuous) on \(L^ 2\). The author had introduced a norm on permutations \(\pi\) which he used to determine when the operator \(T_ \pi\) is continuous on \(L^ p\) for \(p\neq 2\) [see Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 242, 1258-1260 (1978; Zbl 0424.46013)]. Because the Lorentz spaces \(L^{p,q}\) are interpolation spaces of \((L^ r,L^ 2)\) for \(1< r< p<2\) or \(2< p<r<\infty\), one can extend this earlier result from \(L^ p\) spaces to \(L^{p,q}\) spaces, provided \(p\neq 2\). As in the \(L^ p\) case, it turns out that \(\|\pi\|\) controls continuity when \(1< p<2\) and \(\|\pi^{-1}\|\) controls continuity when \(2< p<\infty\). Here the author examines the open question about continuity of \(T_ \pi\) on \(L^{2,q}\), \(q\neq 2\). Surprisingly, it turns out that \(T_ \pi\) is continuous on \(L^{2,q}\) if and only if both \(\| \pi\|\) and \(\|\pi^{-1}\|\) are finite. Thus on \(L^{2,q}\) we have the unique situation that \(T^{-1}_ \pi\) is bounded when \(T_ \pi\) is.
