One considers the initial value problem \[ u'(t)= A_pu(t);\quad u(0)= u_0\tag{1} \] for a differential operator \(A_p\) with constant coefficients on an \(L^p\) space and assumes that \(\sigma(A_p)\) is contained in a half-plane. Concerning the interplay between the existence of a solution of (1) for all \(u_0\in D(A^N_p)\), \(N\in \mathbb{N}\), and the location of the spectrum \(\sigma(A_p)\) or the numerical range \(a(R^n)\) of the symbol \(a\) of \(A_p\) in the complex plane, one proves an affirmative answer provided \(| a(\xi)|\to \infty\), \(|\xi|\to \infty\), which holds, especially, for hypoelliptic operators. Lower bounds are given for the number \(N\) with the property that there exists a unique classical solution of (1) for all \(u_0\in D(A^N_p)\). Assuming also \(\sup_\xi\text{Re}(\xi)< \omega\) for some \(\omega\in \mathbb{R}\), one obtains an affirmative answer to the above-mentioned problem provided \(\rho(A_p)\neq\emptyset\), this condition being an essential one.
