This study mainly relates to an application of a bivariate exponential model in the process of statistical evaluation of cleanup standards at hazardous waste sites. A common procedure to examine if a certain cleanup standard has been attained at a given site by an application of an innovative technology is to compare two samples, a `pre-remediation baseline sample' and an `interim sample' taken, respectively, before and after the technology has been put into action for a certain period, to find out if a pre-determined percentage of the total contaminant has been removed. Usually the two samples are taken to be statistically independent and the quantity measured refers to a positive valued index of the contaminant actually present in the sample at the particular point of time.
