In this short paper the complementary properties of discrete variational inequalities are used to derive a numerical constraint iterative method suitable for the solution of free-boundary problems and others of similar type. The method is shown to have good convergence properties and it is illustrated by means of a numerical application to a free-boundary problem of a type that arises in the study of lubrication.
