It is known that a pair \((G,K)\) of compact quantum groups, where \(K\) is a subgroup of \(G\), is called a Gel'fand pair if the algebra \(L^1 (K \backslash G/K)\) is commutative. It is equivalent to saying that for each irreducible unitary representation of \(G\) there is at most a one-dimensional subspace of \(K\)-biinvariant elements in the span of its matrix coefficients. An analogous definition of a Gel'fand pair of compact quantum groups also exists. The aim of the paper is to give the criteria for a pair of such quantum groups to constitute a Gel'fand pair. This is done in two cases. Firstly, the author considers biinvariance in a compact matrix quantum group with respect to a quantum subgroup. Secondly, the author considers an ``infinitesimal'' approach of this invariance, namely, he studies biinvariance with respect to a certain two-sided coideal in the dual of the Hopf *-algebra defining the compact quantum group.
