Let \(X\) be a compact Hausdorff space and let \(B(X)\) and \(C(X)\) denote the real valued bounded functions and continuous functions, respectively on \(X\), with respect to the norm \(|\;|\) on \(X\). Let \(A(X)\) be a linear subspace of \(C(X)\), containing the constants and finally let \(\{T_{\alpha, \lambda}: \alpha \in D\), \(\lambda\in \Lambda\}\), be a family of bounded operators from \(A(X)\) into \(B(X)\), where \(D\) is a directed set and \(\Lambda\) is an index set. The family \(\{T_{\alpha, \lambda}\}\) is called an approximation process for \(T\), an operator of the same type, if for every \(f\in A(X)\), \(\lim_\alpha |T_{\alpha, \lambda} f-T f|=0\), uniformly in \(\lambda\in \Lambda\). The paper proves a Korovkin type theorem for approximation processes for \(T\) where it is a multiplication by a function from \(B(X)\). Then it proceeds to give some quantitative estimates on the rate at which the above limit tends to zero. These estimates are of the Mond-Shisha type and involve the modulus of continuity of the function \(f\). Applications are given to investigations of the degree of approximation of some positive approximation operators like the multivariate Bernstein operators, the Lototski-Schuable operators and others.
