Let \(L\) be an ample line bundle on a complex projective manifold \(M\) of dimension \(n\geq 2\). The sectional genus \(g=g(M,L)\) of a polarized manifold \((M,L)\) is a nonnegative integer and polarized manifolds with \(g\leq 2\) have been classified. The present paper considers the case \(g=3\) and \(n\geq 3\), while the case \(g=3\) and \(n=2\) has been studied by \textit{H. Maeda} [Sci. Pap. Coll. Arts Sci., Univ. Tokyo 37, No. 2, 103-112 (1987; Zbl 0726.14025)]. By using adjunction-theoretic results due to \textit{T. Fujita} and \textit{P. Ionescu}, we find that polarized manifolds are divided into six classes. Among them, this paper deals with the following two classes: (1) hyperquadric fibrations over smooth curves; (2) Veronese fibrations over smooth curves \((n=3)\). Our classification results for the case (1) with \(g=3\) are similar to those in case \(g=2\) [\textit{T. Fujita}, in: Algebraic geometry and commutative algebra, in Honor of M. Nagata, Vol. I, 73-98 (1988; Zbl 0695.14019)], but the computations are more complicated. The case (2) did not appear in the classifications for \(g\leq 2\); for \(g=3\) it appears and is completely described as two types of \((M,L)\). Under the condition that \(L\) is ample and spanned, \textit{A. Biancofiore}, \textit{A. Lanteri} and \textit{E. L. Livorni} [Math. Ann. 291, No. 1, 87-101 (1991; Zbl 0723.14008)] have classified scrolls over smooth surfaces with \(g=3\), which occupy one of the six classes of \((M,L)\). \textit{Y. Fukuma} and the author have recently classified all classes of \((M,L)\) with \(g=3\) and \(n\geq 3\) under the same condition that \(L\) is ample and spanned (in a preprint).
