Let \(S\) be a topological semigroup. For \(a\in S\) let \(\Gamma(a)\) be the closure of the monothetic subsemigroup of \(S\) generated by \(a\). \(S\) is called \(\Gamma\)-compact if \(\Gamma (a)\) is compact for all \(a \in S\). A \(\Gamma\)-compact topological semigroup \(S\) is called gatic if \(S\) is commutative and archimedean. The author's main theorem is the following: Let \(S\) be a gatic semigroup with minimal ideal \(H\). Then \(S\) has the congruence extension property if and only if \(S\) satisfies both: (i) if \(xy \notin H\), then \(xy = x^2=y^2\), and (ii) if \(xy = xz \notin H\), then \(yz = xy=xz\).
