Let \(\mathcal V\) be the linear space of \(n\) by \(n\) complex matrices with the property that the cardinality of the spectrum of every \(A\in{\mathcal V}\) is at most \(k\). The maximum of the dimension of such spaces is determined by \(k\in \{1,2,n-1\}\) and the structure of the corresponding linear spaces is described.
