A line bundle \(L\) on the projective surface \(S\) is \(k\)-very ample if for all 0-dimensional subschemes \(Z\subset S\) of length \(\leq k+1\), the restriction \(H^0(L)\to H^0(L\otimes \mathcal O_Z)\) surjects. 1-very ample means very ample in the usual sense; if \(L\) is 2-very ample, then the induced embedding of \(S\) in \(\mathbb{P}^n\) gives a surface with no 3-secant lines. k-very ample line bundles with low (sectional) genus or low degree, are quite rare; if the genus is less than \(3k+2\), they are known to live only on minimal K3 surfaces or on surfaces of Kodaira dimension \(-\infty\). Using the classification of surfaces and Reider's construction, the author lists here all the pairs \((S,L)\), with \(L\) a \(k\)-very ample line bundle on \(S\), of genus \(\leq 3k+1\).
