    The author discusses two problems. Let \[ H u (x) = \sum_{|\alpha|,|\beta|\leq m} (-1)^{|\alpha|} D^\alpha (a_{\alpha \beta} D^\beta u(x)) \] with \( a_{\alpha \beta} = \overline{a_{\beta \alpha }} \) complex valued, bounded and measurable functions in \( \mathbb{R}^N.\) The author has already proved that, if \(N> 2m,\) the semigroup \(e^{-H t}\), defined on \(L^2\) for \(t \geq 0,\) can be extended to a strongly continuous semigroup in \(L^p\) for \(p\in [q_c,p_c]\) where \(q_c^{-1} + p_c^{-1} = 1\) and \( p_c = 2N/(N-2m).\) In this paper it is proved that this interval is sharp. The second problem is the following: Consider the contraction semigroup \(e^{-(H_0 + V) t} \) on \( L^2 \) for \( t \geq 0,\) where \(H_0\) is a constant coefficient operator and \(V \geq 0\) is a smooth potential. It is proved that, in general, this semigroup cannot be extended to a strongly continuous semigroup on \(L^p\) for all \(1<p<\infty.\)
