The paper contains basic results on many-sorted algebras (in the sense of P. J. Higgins, 1963), most of them only valid in congruence modular varieties. Connection between the properties of many-sorted varieties and those of varieties of one sort is described. Then several theorems on functional completeness, on the commutator, and on Abelian algebras are proved.
