We consider thin superconducting rings of arbitrary smooth shape. We show that when the ring thickness is much smaller than its radius, the coherence length and the penetration length, the Ginzburg-Landau energy functional can be approximated by a one-dimensional functional. The model we derive is useful for the analysis of several problems in superconductivity such as the Little-Parks effect and Josephson junctions.
