By means of the saddle point theorem the existence of a solution to the problem \[ -u''=u+ g(u)- h(x), \] \(u(0)= u(\pi)=0\) is proved where \(h\in L^1 (0,\pi)\), \(g\in C (\mathbb{R}, \mathbb{R})\), \(\lim_{| u |\to \infty} {g(u) \over u} =0\) and \[ \limsup_{u \to-\infty} F(u) \int^\pi_0 \sin xdx <\int^\pi_0 h(x)\sin xdx <\liminf_{u\to +\infty} F(u)\int^\pi_0 \sin xdx, \] where \(F(u)= {2\over u} \int^u_0 g(s)ds -g(u)\), \(u\neq 0\), \(F(0)=g(0)\).
