    Let \(S\) and \(A\) be operators in a Hilbert space \(H\), and suppose that \(AS=SA\). A description of the set of \(m\times m\) matrix functions \(\psi(z)\) such that \(S= \psi(A)\) is obtained. For the scalar case \(m=1\) this problem was posed and investigated by D. Sarason. The author introduces a notion of a matrix function with operator argument and gives a solution to the aforementioned problem using interpolation theory. The formula \(S= \psi(A)\) proves useful in the problems of classical triangular factorization.
