The following theorem is the main result of the paper under review: If \(X\) is a homotopy commutative, homotopy associative, simply connected finite \(\text{mod }3\) \(H\)-space, then \(H^\ast(X; F_3)\) is isomorphic to the \(\text{mod }3\) cohomology of a product of the Lie groups \(Sp(2)\) as an algebra over the Steenrod algebra. This result is a partial generalization of \textit{C. A. McGibbon}'s theorem [Am. J. Math. 106, 665-687 (1984; Zbl 0574.55004)] on homotopy commutativity in \(p\)-localizations (\(p\) is a prime) of simply connected, compact, simple Lie groups. The proof is based on homotopy theoretical methods; an important role is played by power \(H\)-spaces and power maps. The main result is also generalized to primes greater than \(3\).
