The authors determine the partial derivatives and normals of a surface generated by the butterfly interpolatory subdivision scheme from a general initial triangulation of control points. This butterfly scheme is a generalization of the 4-point scheme for curve design to surfaces. This result is applied to two problems: building offsets to surfaces generated by the butterfly scheme and Gouraud shading of these surfaces as well as shading of their offsets.
