The author discusses the category of representations of a clan. Clans have been introduced by \textit{W. W. Crawley-Boevey} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 40, No.~1, 9-30 (1989; Zbl 0725.16012)] in order to give a formalism for several classical problems from representation theory, for example the classification of pairs \((A,B)\) of matrices such that \(A\) is idempotent and \(B\) is nilpotent. A classification of the (indecomposable) objects has been obtained by Crawley-Boevey, and the present paper completes the description of this category by giving a description of the maps between (indecomposable) objects. As an application, there is included an analysis of the Auslander-Reiten theory for such clans. The main result of the paper is Theorem 2 where the description of the Hom-spaces is given. In Theorem 1, Geiß reformulates Crawley-Boevey's classification of the indecomposable representations in a slightly modified way. In Section 5, irreducible maps and Auslander-Reiten sequences for clans are described. For instance, (5.4) gives the Auslander-Reiten sequences for finite dimensional clans.
