Standardly stratified algebras differ from quasi-hereditary ones by the assertion that the multiplicity of the simple module \(L(i)\) in the corresponding standard module \(\Delta(i)\) can be greater than \(1\). In this paper the authors generalize the concept of characteristic tilting module and of the Ringel dual from quasi-hereditary algebras to standardly stratified algebras. Let \(\Lambda\) be a standardly stratified algebra. In contrast with the situation of quasi-hereditary algebras, for standardly stratified algebras two types of standard modules appear, the second ones are called proper standard modules. Such module is defined as the maximal quotient of the corresponding standard module \(\Delta(i)\) such that the multiplicity of \(L(i)\) in it is \(1\). The definition of the proper costandard module is dual. By a tilting module the authors mean a module, which has a filtration with standard subquotients and a filtration with proper costandard subquotients. They prove that any tilting module is a direct sum of indecomposable ones, the latter being in one-to-one correspondence with simple modules. Taking one time each indecomposable tilting module and forming the direct sum one gets the characteristic tilting module \(T\). The categories of standardly filtered modules and properly costandardly filtered modules then have a nice description in terms of \(T\) as left (resp. right) orthogonal categories to \(T\). The opposite of the endomorphism algebra \(\text{End}_\Lambda(T)\) is shown to be standardly stratified also, which gives a nice analogue for the concept of Ringel dual for \(\Lambda\). Finally, the above results are applied to get a bound for the finitistic dimension of \(\Lambda\).
