The finite element method is used in numerical treatment of solving the Helmholtz eigenvalue equation for electric field of guided waves in an optical fiber of an arbitrary cross-sectional profile. For this purpose, a suitable transparent boundary condition is constructed which eases the problem by reducing the infinite domain around the fiber to a bounded one. The applied method has no spurious solutions and allows for an optimal convergence of results.
