A complete Nevanlinna-Pick irreducible kernel \(k\) on the set \(X\) is, in fact, a function of the form \(k(x,y)= \overline{\delta(x)}\delta(y)/(1- F(x,y))\), where \(\delta\) is a nowhere vanishing function on \(X\) and \(F: X\times X\to{\mathbf D}\) is positive semidefinite, as the authors show in the third Section of the paper under review. (To avoid technicalities, we shall not reproduce the precise definition of this concept.) The authors start with a characterization of complete Nevanlinna-Pick irreducible kernels, exhibiting a new treatment of a result originally proved (independently) by P. Quiggin and S. McCullough. They also show that all complete Nevanlinna-Pick (irreducible) kernels are restrictions of a universal complete Nevanlinna-Pick kernel.
