Let \(\mathbb{I}\subset\mathbb{C}^n\) be a bounded symmetric domain, \(\Omega\subset\subset\mathbb{I}\) a subdomain, \(H^\nu\) the standard weighted Bergman space on \(\mathbb{I}\) (corresponding to some fixed value of the Wallach parameter \(\nu>p-1\), where \(p\) is the genus), and \(T_{\nu,\Omega}\) the Toeplitz operator on \(H^\nu\) with symbol \(\chi_\Omega\), the characteristic function of \(\Omega\). Let further \(\lambda_k(T_{\nu,\Omega})\) stand for the \(k\)\,th eigenvalue of \(T_{\nu,\Omega}\) and \(D_{\varepsilon,c}\) for the collection of all domains \(\Omega\subset\subset\mathbb{I}\) satisfying the ``strip condition'' \[ | \{z\in\mathbb{I}: d(z,\Omega)<\varepsilon\}| \leq c| \Omega| , \] where \(d\) is the invariant distance and \(| \,\cdot\,| \) the invariant volume on \(\mathbb{I}\). The authors prove that for \(\delta\) sufficiently close to \(0\), there exist constants \(c_1,c_2\) (depending on \(\delta,\varepsilon,c\) and \(\mathbb{I}\), but independent of \(\Omega\)) such that \[ c_1| \Omega| \leq \#\{k:\delta<\lambda_k(T_{\nu,\Omega}) <1-\delta\} \leq c_2| \Omega| \] for all \(\Omega\in D_{\varepsilon,c}\). This generalizes a result of \textit{I. Daubechies} and \textit{T. Paul} [Inverse Probl. 4, 661--680 (1988; Zbl 0701.42004)] for \(\mathbb{I}\) the upper half-plane and \(\Omega\) a hyperbolic disc, and of the present authors and \textit{H. G. Feichtinger} [J. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 65, 730--732 (2002; Zbl 1033.47021)] for \(\mathbb{I}\) the upper half-plane and arbitrary \(\Omega\). The main tool is the description of the spectral decomposition of the Berezin transform of \(H^\nu\), due to \textit{A. Unterberger} and \textit{H. Upmeier} [Commun. Math. Phys. 164, 563--597 (1994; Zbl 0843.32019)].
