Let \(V_0\) and \(V_1\) be complex vector bundles on a space \(X\). The author introduces the intersection index of \(V_0\) and \(V_1\), which is equal to the largest \(k\) such that there exists a linear map \(V_0\to V_1\) of rank at least \(k\) everywhere. He uses this index and the language of formal groups and formal divisors to reinterpret earlier works on the degeneracy loci in intersection theory (see especially the paper by \textit{P. Pragacz} in [Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér., IV Sér. 21, 413-454 (1988; Zbl 0687.14043)]) by means of generalised cohomology theory.
