    Let \(X\) be a compact metric space, \(T: X\to X\) be a continuous mapping and \(\mu\) be a \(T\) invariant, aperiodic, ergodic probability measure on \(X\). For any measurable subset \(U\subseteq X\) with \(\mu(U)> 0\), let \(\tau_U(x)\) denote the first return time of \(x\in X\) to \(U\). For \(t\in\mathbb{R}\), let \[ G_U(t)= {1\over \mu(U)} \mu\Biggl\{x\in U\mid \tau_U(x)> {t\over \mu(U)}\Biggr\}. \] Let \({\mathcal G}\) be a class of functions defined by \[ {\mathcal G}= \Biggl\{G: \mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}\mid G= 1\text{ on }(-\infty, 0]\text{ and }\int^\infty_0 G(t)\,dt\leq 1\Biggr\}. \] The author shows that for \(\mu\) a.e. \(x\in X\), there exists a sequence \((U_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\) of neighbourhoods of \(x\) such that \(\{x\}= \bigcap_n U_n\) and for any \(G\in{\mathcal G}\) there exists a subsequence \(\{n_k\}\) such that \(G_{U_{n_k}}\to G\) weakly. In general, the members of the sequence \(\{U_n\}\) may be very `weird' but the author shows that for uniquely ergodic Toeplitz dynamical systems they can be chosen to be cylinder sets.
