The author establishes some existence and nonexistence results for a class of singular elliptic problems with Dirichlet boundary condition on smooth domains \(\Omega\subset \mathbb R^n\), where \(\Omega\) is not necessarily bounded. In the first part of the paper, by means of integral identities that lead to a generalization of the concept of starshapedness, the author establishes nonexistence properties. In this sense, a critical exponent associated to the problem arises and it depends both on the regularity of the coefficients and on geometrical properties of the domain. Next, the author proves some existence results on infinite cylinders of the form \(\Omega=\mathbb R^{j-1}\times\omega\), where \(\omega\) is any open subset of \(\mathbb R^{n-j+1}\) containing the origin. The proofs combine Pohozaev type arguments with standard variational methods.
