Let \(R\) be an associative ring with \(1\). An \(R\)-module is called `endofinite' if it is of finite length, when considered as a module over its endomorphism ring. The `endofinite spectrum' of \(R\) is then the set of all isomorphism classes of indecomposable endofinite \(R\)-modules. This set is endowed with a special partial order, defined in the following way: Let \(M\) be an endofinite \(R\)-module. For an \(R\)-module, \(X\), we denote by \(\chi_M(X)\) the length of the module \(\Hom_R(X,M)\) over the ring \(\text{End}_R(M)\). Then for two endofinite modules \(M\) and \(M'\) we have \(M\leq M'\) if and only if \(\chi_M(X)\leq\chi_{M'}(X)\) for all finitely presented \(R\)-modules \(X\). In the paper under review the author computes the endofinite spectrum for some examples (the polynomial ring, the Kronecker quiver, and some algebras of type \(A_3\)), and studies the behavior of the endofinite spectrum under certain functors. The ultimate goal is to understand the structure of the endofinite spectrum for tame algebras. Among other results one should mention the fact that the endomorphism ring of a minimal element of the endofinite spectrum is a skew field, which implies that every minimal element of the endofinite spectrum belongs to the Cohn spectrum. Finally, the author also introduces a modified version of the endofinite spectrum, called the normalized endofinite spectrum and shows that it is isomorphic as a partially ordered set to the normalized endofinite spectrum of the opposite ring.
