The authors develop a general theory of semisimple representations of Cayley-Hamilton algebras. Restrictions of such representations to subalgebras are studied and a concept of a Cayley-Hamilton Hopf algebra is introduced. A Clebsch-Gordan decomposition is proved in this framework. If \(\mathfrak g\) is a simple complex Lie algebra, and \(\epsilon\) is a primitive root of unity of odd order \(\ell\) (in case of components of type \(G_2\) the condition that \(\ell\) is not a multiple of 3 is also needed), then the quantized universal enveloping algebra \(U_{\varepsilon}({\mathfrak g})\) is a Cayley-Hamilton Hopf algebra, and the general theory is applied to prove that the tensor product of two generic irreducible representations is a direct sum of irreducible representations, all with the same multiplicity \({\ell}^{| \Delta_+| -n}\), where \(n\) is the rank of \(\mathfrak g\) and \(\Delta_+\) is the set of positive roots of \(\mathfrak g\). Similar decompositions are proved for restrictions of generic irreducible representations to \(U_{\varepsilon}({\mathfrak b})\), where \(\mathfrak b\) is a Borel subalgebra of \(\mathfrak g\), and for tensor products of generic irreducible representations of \(U_{\varepsilon}({\mathfrak b})\).
