The article classifies codimension-2 degenerate sliding bifurcations of piecewise smooth dynamical systems, like a periodically forced linear oscillator with dry friction. For this type of systems, four different simple (codimension-1) bifurcations are well known: crossing-sliding, grazing-sliding, switching-sliding and adding-sliding. For these bifurcations, nondegeneracy conditions are given. If a second system parameter is varied, these conditions may be violated, leading to the occurence of a degenerate bifurcation. The possible degenerate scenarios are classified in a two-dimensional parameter space. It is shown that several branches of codimension-1 sliding bifurcations originate from the degenerate codimension-2 points. Also the generic motions in the neighbourhood of the bifurcation points are displayed. This article not only helps to understand the complex dynamics close to the bifurcation points, but should also be very useful for numerical continuation programs.
