A finite dimensional algebra has one of three representation types: finite, tame, or wild, determined by whether the algebra has finitely many indecomposable modules, infinitely many indecomposable modules with a hope of classification, or infinitely many indecomposables with little hope of classification, respectively. The work of \textit{E. Cline, B. Parshall}, and \textit{L. Scott} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 391, 85--99 (1988; Zbl 0657.18005)] allows this classification to be applied to highest weight categories, via a connection between highest weight categories and quasi-hereditary algebras. In this lengthy article, the authors classify the representation type of integral blocks \({\mathcal O}_S^\mu\) of the highest weight category \({\mathcal O}_S\) (importantly containing generalized Verma modules associated to \(S\)) for a given complex semisimple Lie algebra \({\mathfrak g}\), where \(S\) is a subset of simple roots for \({\mathfrak g}\) and \(\mu\) is an integral weight. These results build on earlier work [\textit{V. Futorny, D. Nakano} and \textit{R. Pollak}, Q. J. Math. 52, 285--305 (2001; Zbl 1021.17008)] classifying the representation type of the Bernstein-Bernstein-Gelfand category \({\mathcal O}\) and allow the authors to extend the results of [\textit{T. Enright} and \textit{B. Shelton}, Categories of highest weight modules: applications to classical Hermitian symmetric pairs, Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 367 (1987; Zbl 0621.17004)] concerning categorical equivalences to a wider class of algebras. Integral blocks for \({\mathcal O}_S\) can be associated with subsets \(J\) of the collection of simple roots. The authors first classify the representation type for `regular' blocks of \({\mathcal O}_S\) (here \(J=\emptyset\) ), pointing out that there are no regular blocks with tame representation type. The authors then classify the representation type for `mixed' blocks (here \(J\cap S=\emptyset\)). The results in the mixed case allow the recovery of the results given in [Futorny, Nakano, Pollak, loc. cit.] for blocks of the category \({\mathcal O}\) when \(S=\emptyset\) as well as the results for the regular blocks of \({\mathcal O}_S\) in the case that \(J=\emptyset\) (hence the origin of the terminology `mixed'). The authors engage in extensive computations to verify results, including computer calculations of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.
