The article refers to a class of initial boundary value problems for a nonlinear system of balance laws. The well posedness of the system is proved under the assumptions that a conservation law with boundary -- actually a generalized Riemann problem -- and a differential equation containing the source term are well posed and compatible to each other. Under quite restrictive and complicated conditions regarding the generalized Riemann problem -- for instance to be a Temple system -- and the source term model, one proves the existence of a weak entropic solution. The paper rather selects topics from previous articles of one of the authors [\textit{R. M. Colombo} and \textit{A. Corli}, J. Hyperbolic Differ. Equ. 1, 725--745 (2004; Zbl 1066.35055); first author and \textit{A. Groli}, Nonlinear Anal. 56, 569--589 (2004; Zbl 1058.35150)] and the proofs are superficial.
