    Let \(R\) be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension~\(d\). \textit{B. Ulrich} [Math. Z. 188, 23--32 (1984; Zbl 0573.13013)] showed that \(R\) is Gorenstein if there is a finitely generated \(R\)-module of positive rank such that (1)~\(2\nu(M) > e(M)\) and (2)~\(\text{Ext}_R^i(M,R) = 0\) for \(0 < i \leq d\). Here \(\nu(M)\) denotes the number of generators of~\(M\) and \(e(M)\) the multiplicity of~\(M\). In the present article, the authors replace (1) by weaker inequalities. However, they had to assume that (2\('\)) \(M\) is a maximal Cohen-Macaulay module and \(\text{Ext}_R^i(M,R) = 0\) for \(0 < i \leq d+1\), which is stronger than~(2).
