The author investigates the following ``polynomial moment problem'': For a fixed complex polynomial \(P(z)\), and distinct complex numbers \(a\) and \(b\), describe polynomials \(q(z)\) such that \[ \int_a^b P^i(z)q(z)\, dz=0\qquad (i=0,1,2,\dots). \] Roughly speaking, the main result of this paper (cf. Section 2) states that the condition that \(q(z)\) is orthogonal to all powers of \(P(z)\) is equivalent to the condition that branches of the algebraic function \(Q(P^{-1}(z))\), where \(Q(z)=\int q(z)\, dz\), satisfy a certain system of linear equations over \(\mathbb Z\). With the aid of this result, the author provides the solution of the polynomial moment problem for wide classes of polynomials.
