Let \(E\) be a complex Banach space, and let \(A\) be a linear closed operator acting on the domain \(D(A)\subset E\) that is not necessarily dense in \(E\). Further, let an integer \(n\geqslant 3\) and integers \(p,q\) be such that \(0\leqslant p,q\leqslant n-1\). Consider the generalized Ward problem on the interval \([0,T]\subset \mathbb{R}\) \[ \begin{cases} u^{(n)}(t)=Au(t), & 0<t<T, \\ u^{(j)}(0)=u_{0,j}, & j\in\{0,1,\dots,n-1\}\setminus\{p\}, \\ u^{(q)}(T)=u_{0,q}, \end{cases}\tag{\(*\)} \] for \(u_{0,j}, u_{0,q}\in E, j\in\{0,1,\dots,n-1\}\setminus\{p\}\). A function \(u\in C^n([0,T];E))\cap C^{(n-1)}((0,T);E))\) is referred to as a solution of the problem if \(u(t)\in D(A)\) for each \(t\in (0,T)\) and the relations of \((*)\) are satisfied. The author derives a uniqueness criterion for problem \((*)\). It turns out that the uniqueness of the solution is caused only by mutual arrangement of the zeros of a function \(X_{p-q}(z)\), being a special case of the Mittag-Leffler function, and the eigenvalues of the operator \(A\).
