The author determines the Borchers class of the massive free-field in two dimensional space-time. This class contains not only the Wick polynomials but also certain infinite sums of such polynomials. The allowed infinite sums must give rise to a tempered two-point function, analytic in the cut plane, and the author characterizes this class of infinite series in terms of the series of coefficients of the power series. He then shows that the \(n\)-point function is automatically an analytic function satisfying the requirements of Wightman's reconstruction theorem, and further, that these functions are tempered, for any sum of this class. The technique of the proof is to consider sequences of functions satisfying the Wightman properties (given by the partial sums of the series) and to ask when the limit exists, and has the Wightman properties. The main tool is a theorem ``on the convergence of Wightman theories'', stated without proof here, which subsequently has appeared [the author, J. Math. Phys. 6, 1172--1178 (1965; Zbl 0137.45604)]. The author shows that the maximum order of derivative that can appear in any sum must be finite if the sum defines a field in the Wightman sense. Thus the Borchers class is completely specified. The infinite sums converge on a certain dense set of vectors, and are entire functions of a natural scaling parameter. Similar results are derived for a theory with \(n\) free-fields of various non-zero masses. The author then derives various properties of the field-operator; in particular its bounded functions lie in a ``local ring'' of operators in the sense of Haag under certain general conditions on the space-time region. An appendix contains some useful results on the re-ordering of products of Wick polynomials.
