Optimality of chemical balance weighing designs is considered in this paper. The authors have used a ternary design matrix \(X_ d\in C(N,n)\) for \(N\geq n\) with entries -1,0,1. The authors have chosen the optimality criteria of type I as defined by \textit{C.-S. Cheng} in Ann. Stat. 8, 436- 446 (1980; Zbl 0425.62055). Their results mainly depend on the information matrix of a design \(d\in D\), where D is a class of weighing designs. They have stated and proved certain theorems taking different values of N, e.g. \(N=2 (mod 4)\) and \(N\geq 4\). E-optimality of some designs in D(N,n) is also proved. For D(N,n) and \(N=3 (mod 4)\) and \(n\geq 4\), any design \(d^*\) obtained by adding an additional row consisting of 1's, -1's or 0's is also shown to be E-optimal in D(N,n). The paper deals intelligibly with optimality criteria of weighing designs. I would have added a star if a real problem had been cited.
