This paper may be considered to be a technical supplement to previous papers of the authors [Duke Math. J. 49, 517-620 (1982), and Harm. Anal. Conf. in Honor of A. Zygmund, Chicago 1981, 508-525 (1983; Zbl 0509.42021)]. Estimates are obtained for Peano maximal functions \({\mathcal P}^*_{\alpha,q}(F)(x)\)- for instance, if \(0<\alpha \leq 1\), \({\mathcal P}^*_{\alpha,q}(F)(x)=\sup_{s,h>0}h^{-\alpha -n/q}(\int_{| u|<h}| F(x+u,s)-F(x,s)|^ q)^{1/q}\) where F is a harmonic function in the half space \({\mathbb{R}}^{n+1}_+\), in terms of weighted and non-tangential maximal functions, involving F and its derivatives. Various applications, for instance to Marcinkiewicz integrals, are given. The results hold for \(L^ p\) and \(H^ p\) norms. As a sample result, let \({\mathcal D}^*_{\alpha}(F)(x)\) be defined by the rule \({\mathcal D}^*_{\alpha}(F)(x)=\sup_{s>0}\int_{{\mathbb{R}}^ n}| F(x+u,s)-F(x,s)|^ 2u^{-n-2\alpha}du)^{1/2}.\) Then for appropriate weights w and harmonic F, \(\| {\mathcal D}^*_{\alpha}(F)\|_{L^ p_ w}\approx \| {\mathcal P}^*_{\alpha}\|_{L^ p_ w}+\| N(F^{(\alpha)})\|_{L^ p_ w},\) where the last term involves a non-tangential maximal functions of a fractional integral of F.
