    \textit{J. Dedieu} [Bull. Soc. Math. Fr., Suppl., Mem. 60, 31--44 (1979; Zbl 0433.46005)] has defined the asymptotic cone \(A_{\infty}\) of a non-empty closed subset \(A\) of a real topological vector space by \(A_{\infty}=\cap \{\overline{(0,\varepsilon]A}: \varepsilon>0\}\). As this definition possesses some inconveniences, the second author [Bull. Soc. R. Sci. Liège 49, 312--346 (1980; Zbl 0467.52001)] has introduced another notion of an asymptotic cone of a subset \(A\) of a real vector space \(E\) by \({\mathcal A}(A)=\cap \{\overline{(0,\varepsilon]A}^ n : \varepsilon>0\}\), where \(\bar B^ n\) means the closure of \(B\subset E\) in the natural topology of \(E\) (which is the finest locally convex vector topology on \(E\)). Define \({\mathcal I}_ 0(\bar A^ n,a)=\cap \{\varepsilon(\bar A^ n-a) : \varepsilon>0\}\) (\(a\in E,\,A\subset E)\). If is shown that \({\mathcal A}(A)={\mathcal I}_ 0(\bar A^ n,a)\) whenever \(A\) is a nonempty subset of \(E\) which is weakly star-shaped on a point \(a\in E\) (i.e. \((a,x]\subset A\) for each \(x\) in \(A\)). If \(A\) is convex, then \({\mathcal A}(A)\) equals to the recession cone \(A\) as well as to the infinitude cone of \(A\). If \(A\) is non-empty cone with its apex at 0, then \({\mathcal A}(A)=\bar A^ n\). If \(A\) is a non-empty set in \(\mathbb R^ n\), then the polar of the barrier cone of \(A\) equals to \({\mathcal A}(\text{conv}\,A)\).
