Let E,F be Banach spaces, \(L:E\to F\) a bounded Fredholm operator of index zero and h:\(E\to F\) a compact map. It is proved that, if the Brouwer degree of the vector field \(v:Ker L\to F/Im L\) given by the composition \(Ker L\to^{i}E\to^{h}F\to^{\pi}F/Im L\) (where i is the inclusion and \(\pi\) is the canonical projection) is defined and nonzero, then the equation \(Lx=\lambda h(x)\) has a connected subset C of solution pairs \((\lambda,x)\in {\mathbb{R}}\times E\) such that: i) the sets \(C^- =\{(\lambda,x)\in C:\quad \lambda<0\}\) and \(C^+=\{(\lambda,x)\in C:\quad \lambda>0\}\) are both unbounded; ii) the intersection \(C\cap(\{0\}\times E)\) is a nonempty subset of \(\{0\}\times v^{-1}(0).\) Some extensions of this result to nonlinear eigenvalue problems possessing more general right-hand sides are also given. It should be observed that the above result turns out to generalize to the resonant case a classical \textit{P. H. Rabinowitz'} nonbifurcation result, J. Funct. Anal. 7, 487-513 (1971; Zbl 0212.165).
